TRC x Lit Immigration Book Club

kirsten2112

The Refugee Center and The Literary invite you to learn about our foreign-born neighbors through an immigrant and refugee centered reading series!

Each month, we'll read a book focusing on one of CU's largest immigrant populations to better understand the experiences and process of resettlement. Meetings will take place the last Wednesday of every month at 7pm from June to September. No advance registration is required- simply join us in downtown Champaign at The Literary!

Since the evacuation of Afghanistan in August 2021, The Refugee Center has welcomed over 80 Afghan newcomers to the CU community, and that number continues to grow. This month, we'll be reading and discussing The Haunting of Hajji Hotek and Other Stories, by Jamil Jan Kochai. This collection of short stories grapples with the emotional effects of decades of war in Afghanistan, exploring experiences from both modern day Afghanistan and the Afghan diaspora in the US.

Want to read ahead? Upcoming Immigration Book Club events:

-June 28th: The Haunting of Hajji Hotek by Jamil Jan Kochai

-July 26th: The Refugees by Viet Thanh Nguyen

-August 30th: The Girl Who Smiled Beads by Clemantine Wamariya
